Job Description:


Germanna Community College is a public, open access institution of higher education in the Virginia Community College System. Germanna Community College is centrally located in Fredericksburg, VA between Washington D.C. and Richmond and between the Blue Ridge mountains and the Chesapeake Bay. Reporting to the Dean of Student Development, the Coordinator of Career & Transfer Services leads efforts to enhance student success through strategic planning, employer engagement, and collaboration with college and community partners. The Coordinator manages comprehensive career services, including apprenticeships, internships, externships, Federal Work-Study positions, and part- and full-time employment. A key focus is meeting the Virginia Community College System's (VCCS) 2024-2030 goal to increase student participation in paid internships and apprenticeships by 25% by 2030.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Build and maintain strong partnerships with local, regional, and national employers, government agencies, and nonprofits to provide paid internships and job opportunities for all students, including dual enrollment and early college students.
  • Develop and manage a diverse portfolio of internships in the Fredericksburg area and surrounding counties, ensuring alignment with student academic and career goals.
  • Conduct site visits to evaluate internship hosts and ensure high-quality experiences.
  • Oversee the Symplicity Career Hub platform, GermannaWorks, approving employers and reviewing job postings.
  • Lead outreach efforts to expand transfer partnerships with four-year colleges and universities, including Guaranteed Admission Programs and Articulation Agreements.
  • Provide career preparation support, including resume reviews, interview coaching, and professional etiquette guidance.
  • Supervise a team of full-time, part-time, and Federal Work-Study staff.
  • Organize career fairs, workshops, and signature programming such as HBCU Week, Transfer Fairs, and Work-Based Learning Fairs.
Data-Driven Leadership:
  • Track and analyze student outcomes to assess the effectiveness of internship and transfer programs, using data to inform improvements.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and college policies.
  • Prepare regular reports on program performance and future opportunities.
Commitment to Equity:
  • Promote equitable access to students with their transfer, career exploration, and employment needs. Engage in outreach to create, sustain, and expand Germanna's transfer partners, including HBCUs, Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs), and Minority-Serving Institutions (MSIs). The Coordinator is responsible for an equity advancement focus on employment and transfer opportunities for students.

This position will be required to travel to all college locations and throughout our service community area. Additionally, this position will be required to attend meetings across the state and elsewhere as needed.

Special Assignments:

KSA's/Required Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in a relevant field.
  • 3-5 years of experience in higher education, college student personnel, employment services, employment training, human resources, recruitment, or another appropriate field.
  • Previous supervisory experience.
  • Demonstrated commitment to promoting and enhancing equity, inclusion, and diversity.
  • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication competence.
  • Excellent relationship-building skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to form and fully leverage cross-functional teams of colleagues and academic/administrative leaders to develop policies and coordinate programming.
  • Ability to analyze, assess, and interpret data for strategic planning and decision-making.
  • Strong technical and computer skills.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends.
  • Experience with or willingness to learn artificial intelligence tools.
