Position Summary

Big Bend Community College (BBCC) is accepting applications for a full-time, tenure-track position in Biology. BBCC is a small rural community college located in the sunny, central part of Washington State and is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities. Big Bend Community College serves over 5,000 students annually, with an annualized FTE of approximately 2,100, in a 4,600-square-mile service district including 15 communities in Grant and Adams Counties and the Odessa School District in Lincoln County with on-site, online instruction, and interactive classrooms.

The Biological Sciences department has two full-time instructors within the larger Math/Science Division. We are looking for someone prepared and interested in teaching biological or closely related sciences.

The salary for this position is based upon a combination of education and experience. Full-time faculty at Big Bend are contracted for 173 days. The anticipated start date is September 17, 2018.


Essential Job Duties

Primary essential responsibilities will include but not be limited to the following:



  • Prepare and teach transfer classes in biology, particularly the majors sequence which includes the topics of cell and molecular biology, organismal physiology, ecology, and evolution. Other classes might include survey of biology, human biology, field botany, nutrition and environmental science. This may include day, evening, hybrid, and online classes.

  • Provide access for students through posted office hours, electronic communication, and other appropriate methods.

  • Instruct, assist, and motivate students through careful preparation of course materials, effective teaching methodologies and informed critical feedback on assignments and discussions.

  • Utilize technology as part of the course design to facilitate student learning and success.

  • Provide general student advising.

  • Participate in decision-making processes as an active member of working committees dealing with instruction, college-wide and department assessment, student matters, and/or college related concerns.

  • Work effectively with colleagues and students of diverse backgrounds and be a positive contributing member of the campus community.

  • Provide advice and support for Biology Associate Faculty in conjunction with the Department.

  • Maintain positive and effective communications with students, faculty, administration, and staff.

  • Foster a flexible, healthy learning environment with respect for student diversity.

  • Demonstrate a commitment to professional growth, development, and conduct.

  • Other duties as agreed to with the Division Chair or Dean.



MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
At the time of application, all applicants must possess the following:



  • A Master's degree in Biology (preferred) or in a biological science with extensive coursework in Biology from a regionally accredited institution or due to be completed by August 2018. A Master's degree in Biology Education is acceptable provided a Bachelor's degree is in Biology.

  • Experience teaching at the post-secondary level, including laboratory exercises.

  • Experience working with students from diverse academic, age, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds.



DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Teaching experience at the community college level, including creating and teaching laboratory exercises.

  • Experience teaching introductory and majors-level biology courses.

  • Ability to teach introductory courses in another science area including Botany, Nutrition, and Environmental Science.

  • Experience implementing innovative teaching methods such as inverted instruction, coordinated studies, team teaching, active learning, or computer-aided instruction.

  • Strong computer skills, especially education resources and applications such as PowerPoint, Word, Internet, learning management systems (such as Canvas or Blackboard), and Outlook.

  • Bilingual English/Spanish proficiency.
