Financial Aid Counselor


The University of Notre Dame (ND.jobs) is accepting applications for a Financial Aid Counselor.

  • Serve as the first-line of counsel to undergraduate and graduate/professional students and families about costs and affordability, application procedures, financial aid programs, and policies, eligibility requirements, and financing options in a skillful, timely and professional manner through personal interviews, written correspondence and social media.
  • Comprehend all stages of applicant processing, including, but not limited to, federal verification, need analysis, packaging, disbursement report review and problem resolution. Respond to inquiries regarding student account and payment as a first-line of customer service and direct students when appropriate to the Office of Student Accounts.
  • Provide support in various financial aid programs and processes, such as file review/verification, report analysis, and data entry. Perform printing of computer system generated letters, reports, labels, and other documents and deliver as needed.
  • Complete on-going review of all forms of communications (e.g. website, forms, email templates, letters, etc.) to ensure the message is clear to students and families, reflects current policy and meets Federal Consumer Right-to-Know regulations.
  • Coordinate with Administrative Assistant in scheduling and preparing appointments. Provide back-up to Administrative Assistant on special projects as needed.

    Minimum Qualifications:
    Bachelors degree (4 years) Six to twelve months prior experience in higher education setting, financial aid office or financial related area is required. A successful candidate must have a commitment to excellent customer service and enjoy serving students and parents. Must be able to work in a fast paced environment and provide information in a pleasant, personal, articulate, and professional manner. Must have strong interpersonal skills, both oral and written, to effectively communicate with a diverse group of individuals. Must be able to maintain confidentiality and deal with sensitive matters discreetly. Have the ability to utilize a customer service approach to problem solving and maintain complex technical rules in support of business processes. Knowledge of technology, including the ability to see how technology can increase effectiveness of communication to financial aid applicants is key. High degree of attention to detail, organizational skills, and critical thinking skills are required. Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision.

    Preferred Qualifications:
    Experience with ERP software (e.g., Ellucian, PeopleSoft, Slate) as well as other application software preferred but not required.
