About the Opportunity
JOB SUMMARY
The primary function of this role are to serve as a systems engineer for faculty research projects. The successful candidate will work with faculty across the Khoury College of Computer Sciences to design, deploy, and maintain the lifecycle of research computing infrastructure. The exact requirements for each research project will vary, including but not limited to design of systems for research, selection and deployment of hardware for research infrastructure, routine maintenance of research systems, utilization of university HPC resources, creation of user accounts, following data-classification guidelines and adhering to data privacy policies when applicable, and other tasks including programming opportunities for developing research systems, front-end web-facing systems, as well as back-ends. It is anticipated that most tasks will be using Linux or UNIX machines following established Infrastructure as Code (IaC) processes. This position will interact regularly with the Khoury College Systems Group, as well as the University's Information Technology Services department and Research Computing group.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: BS or MS in Computer Science, Engineering or an equivalent field preferred, but not required.
Skills: Multi-year experience as a system administrator supporting Linux/UNIX environments, including management of full-stack operations on a platform such as Kubernetes, is required. Kubernetes deployment and management experience preferred. Experience with front-end web services (Django, React, and similar technologies), Spark, content management systems, database administration (Mongo), high performance computing, and other container platforms is a plus. The ability to prioritize and manage concurrent projects serving multiple faculty clients is a necessity. Utilize ITIL-based incident management and knowledge creation tools such as ServiceNow to triage support requests and build robust documentation. Experience with additional Configuration Management tools such as Puppet and Foreman a plus.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES & ACCOUNTABILITIES
1) Research, design, deployment, and maintenance of computing systems to support faculty research projects; consulting with various stakeholders on design and implementation details to ensure their needs are met. Ensure data-classification and protection policies are followed as required.
2) Day-to-day system administration (creating user accounts, maintaining operating systems, applying software patches, handling hardware failures, etc)
3) Developing solutions for research projects (web front-ends, content management platforms, submission backends, etc)
4) Consult with faculty to help them understand research computing and available support options, keep an up-to-date record of available infrastructure and resources. Collaborate with Northeastern Research Computing to take advantage of existing resources. Conduct training as needed.
