Job Description Summary
The Guo Laboratory in the Department of Neurology at the University of Pennsylvania is seeking a Research Specialist to assist with research aimed at understanding the molecular basis of Alzheimer's disease. The goal of our research is to understand the DNA sequence and gene expression signatures that make brain cells more or less vulnerable to Alzheimer's disease pathology, with the ultimate goal of using these insights to catalyze new therapeutic strategies. Our lab applies a wide range of approaches including human genetics, genomics, and stem cell-derived cell culture models.

Position contingent upon funding.

Job Description

The Department of Neurology is seeking a highly motivated candidate to work on multiple translational research projects related to the genetic and genomic basis of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. The research specialist will involve a wide range of approaches in molecular biology, genome engineering, analyses of post-mortem tissues, and in vitro disease modeling, including tissue collection, flow sorting, tissue culture, and gene editing. The specialist will also help engineer high throughput genetic screening vectors, including production of lentivirus and/or adeno-associated viral vector for delivery of screening libraries. The specialist will lead development and application of next generation sequencing approaches, including RNA-seq, DNA sequencing, and epigenetic profiling. The specialist will lead laboratory organization, ordering of supplies, and maintenance of equipment. The specialist will learn and perform basic computational analysis of genomics data, prepare scientific presentations and participate in manuscript preparation. This research specialist will help train and onboard new staff and study personnel and effectively communicate with collaborators across research projects.

Job Responsibilities
  • Developing and applying cell culture approaches to studying neurodegeneration
  • Developing and applying genomic screening approaches to studying
  • Isolation and sorting of post-mortem human brain tissues
  • Maintaining tissue culture room, including incubators, hoods, and liquid nitrogen
  • Assistance with purchasing and organization of laboratory reagents
  • Development and application of single cell and other genomics assays.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned


Qualifications
  • Master of Science and 3 to 5 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
